Because the raw coffee beans are said to have various effects that are supposed to ensure increased well-being and shedding pounds. Green coffee has been hyped for a long time, especially on the Internet. It almost seems as if the numerous online shops in dietary supplements have been looking for a new product that is now to be brought to women and men. After various superfoods, cannabidiol (CBD) & Co., a new star now seems to be shining in the sales sky.
It is suggested that the chlorogenic acid in green coffee can help you lose weight by inhibiting certain enzymes responsible for weight gain. The acid blocks the uptake of glucose in the blood and suppresses an increase in blood sugar level, leading to the formation of new fat, which can lead to weight loss. We took a closer look at that.
What is green coffee?
Green coffee basically means the raw coffee bean. Green coffee can be ground and brewed. The resulting “coffee” is very different in taste from the black coffee with roasted beans.
When you drink a green coffee, you benefit from the beans’ active ingredients in their natural form. Studies assume that the raw coffee bean has far more positive properties than the well-known roasted black bean.
How does the green coffee taste?
People who love the tart and intense taste of the coffee will most likely be disappointed with green coffee. Conventional coffee owes its taste to its roasting alone. If producers use the raw unprocessed bean, the beloved roasted aroma cannot, of course, be achieved. The taste of green coffee is much more comparable to green tea or other herbal teas.

Lose weight with green coffee?
Since green coffee lowers the blood sugar level, unnecessary feelings of hunger, and the desire for sweet foods are reduced. Consuming green coffee on a regular basis can prevent food cravings and help you lose weight. At least this is what manufacturers and numerous online shops advertise on the Internet.
In fact, the chlorogenic acid in raw beans, which is unfortunately lost during the roasting process, ensures that the body burns fatter. In high concentrations, the active ingredient chlorogenic acid can even inhibit enzymes in the body that converts sugar into fat. But is the effect sufficient to sustainably lose weight using green coffee bean extract (GCE)? Some studies examined this and came to a positive result (including one from the US University of Scranton in Pennsylvania). Still, the number of participants was so small that the results are not particularly meaningful.
The results of a comparative meta-study in which the international authors from Iran, Great Britain, and China evaluated and compared a total of 13 scientific articles with 16 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) is more interesting. The result is quite interesting because while there was no significant weight reduction, the reduction in body mass index (BMI) was clear. The results were particularly striking for those participants who were very overweight with a BMI ≥of 25 kg / m2. However, these results were only detectable when green coffee bean extract was dispensed over a longer period of time; applications for less than 4 weeks showed no change.
In any case, the authors conclude that the intake of GCE can be useful for people who suffer from obesity (BMI) of ≥25 kg / m2. ¹
However, the result also shows that green coffee for weight loss has not yet been scientifically recommended. Therefore, the recommendations remain unchanged: people achieve the best results when they change their diet and get enough exercise.
What green coffee supposedly can do
Green coffee contains a large number of antioxidants that can trap free radicals in the body and thus contribute to better health. Free radicals are caused by stress, improper diet, and air pollutants. The immune system is supported by the chlorogenic acid contained and the aging of the skin can also be reduced by the antioxidant effect.
Chlorogenic acid is said to have a particularly beneficial effect on health.
Early research shows that the active ingredient can even lower high blood pressure. It is also assumed that green coffee’s active ingredients can prevent type 2 diabetes, but studies are still ongoing.
How do you make a green coffee?
If you decide to buy the ground version, then the best thing to do is make it like tea. The green powder is placed in a tea strainer and brewed with hot water (approx. 95 ° C). After the green coffee has been brewed for about 5 minutes, you can enjoy it. The price range of one kilo of unroasted green coffee in organic quality is between 19 and 35 EUR depending on the country of origin.
If you find the taste very unpleasant, you can also get the green coffee extract, which can be easily integrated into the diet in capsule form, for example. The costs are of course not without because 100 pieces cost around EUR 22.-.
Green coffee side effects
People who cannot tolerate caffeine should, of course, also avoid the green beans. Often people report a laxative effect of the coffee or headaches.
Green coffee is a way of doing something good for your body, especially if you can’t stand the black roasted beans. The benefits outweigh the benefits. Nonetheless, connoisseurs must be aware that green coffee has no roasted aroma.
